Monday, December 14, 2015 WOW-Zine

The countdown continues--only eleven more days 'til Christmas. I hope you're able to enjoy yourself in the middle of all the busyness. In case you haven't had a chance to read it yet, I'll include the article about peace that I wrote for the church newsletter last week.

This special notice is for those who attend (or would like to come for the first time) The Perk on Thursday morning at 9:30. Last week we decided to have a little Christmas brunch along with our Bible study. Jaimie is bringing biscuits and gravy, so plan around that. Let's bring enough so that the kiddos can have a bite to eat too. If you forget about it, or simply don't have time to make/bring something, don't let that stop you from attending. This will be our last meeting of 2015, but we'll resume on January 7, 2016.

Common Grounds will meet Thursday night at 6:30. No one has said anything about doing something special for that. (I think most women are exhausted by that time of night and just lucky to make it at all!) If you want to bring a goodie, feel free! We will not be meeting again until January 7th.

We won't take down the Christmas decorations at church until Friday, January 8th. (It's always faster/easier to take down than put up!) We'll meet at 6 PM that evening for pizza and dismantling, followed by a game night. If coming at 6 for pizza doesn't work for you, please just show up around 7 for games. (Bring some!) Please let me know if you'll be there for the pizza and tear down, so I know how many pizzas to get. A contribution of $5/person is greatly appreciated.

Now here's the piece about peace I wanted to share with you:

And of His Peace ...
Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end. ~ Isaiah 9:7

Christmas—the time of year when it’s cold outside but warm in our hearts. When everyone gets along and there are no squabbles between the kids. The time of year when goodwill emanates from strangers in the store, and everyone greets us with a smile. When joy fills our hearts and we can’t help breaking out into a carol. You know that time of year? Me neither!

Christmas is no respector of life. The hardships and challenges of our lives don’t stop simply because it’s December. There are still fractured marriages to be lived in, cancer diagnoses to receive, mental health issues to be addressed ... and the list goes on.

The Christ Child was born into such a world. Born into the messiness of a stable, and the greater messiness of our lives. Lives that struggle to hold on to hope at times. Lives that are nearly overwhelmed by the despair around us.

As I ponder Isaiah 9:7, I see two things: Christ’s government (or rule) will have no end, nor will there be an end to His peace. It’s easy to project that into the future, but I believe it’s true for us here and now. And I need to cling to that. Paul knits those two concepts together in Colossians 3:15 when he reminds us to let the peace of Christ rule in our hearts. When we allow Him to be the ruler of our lives, we will never run out of the peace needed to deal with our daily struggles.

I’m not saying it’s easy, but it is possible. Whether you find yourself in paragraph one this year, or down in the second paragraph, I pray you will give the Lord more room to rule in your heart and find the peace that goes along with that, no matter what your circumstances.

Until next time,

Tuesday, December 8, 2015 WOW-Zine

Hello on this wet, wet Tuesday afternoon! This will be a really short WOW-Zine this week, as we're letting you mostly concentrate on Christmas, your family, and keeping dry!

We do plan on having our Women's Bible Studies this week and next before stopping for Christmas break. Jody is providing goodies for The Perk on Thursday morning at 9:30, and Lauren has provided a snack for Common Grounds at 6:30 Thursday night. I hope you can join us at one of those times at the church as we continue our way through Colossians 2.

And that's all for this week! Hope to see you at a Bible study, "the good Lord willin' and the creek don't rise!" as Tennessee Ernie Ford always ended his television program with when I was a kid. I know, most of you won't even know who I'm referring to!!

Until next time,

Monday, November 30, 2015 WOW-Zine

Welcome to as-close-as-you-can-get to December without it being December! This is a busy month for most of us, with lots of things going on in our homes, as well as plenty to participate in with church events. I hope you're able to attend several of our activities.

This Saturday is the long-awaited WOW Christmas party--The Joy of Christmas. The dinner and party begin at the Rusaw's at 6 PM. (An optional cookie exchange will begin there at 5 PM. Bring 2 dozen cookies and an extra empty tray to pile your selections on to take home.) Car pooling is heavily suggested, so if you'd like to do that, meet behind the church at 5:30. We'll leave from there no later than 5:40. (Please bring slippers/socks to wear inside.)

We're asking that everyone bring a favorite food for our dinner. Please sign up with what you'd like to bring at http://www.perfectpotluck.com/meals.php?t=FXCY2214
Wear some Christmas finery and bring a $10 present for our gift exchange. It will be a casual, relaxing evening with friends. Remember, our women's events are for those girls who are seniors in high school, and above. Your men and children will need to fend for themselves that evening!

After taking a break for Thanksgiving, our women's Bible studies will resume this Thursday. The Perk meets at 9:30 AM at the church. Nicole P. is bringing snacks, and we do have childcare available. Thursday evening at 6:30 at the church Common Grounds will meet. We don't have childcare for the night meeting, but we DO have goodies, brought to us this week by Lauren. Feel free to join us at any time!

Please remember to pray for Carol Fones, who has been in ICU at St. Vincent's with extremely high (nearly 1000!) blood sugar levels. She is doing better today with her numbers lowering to around 225, though that is still way above normal.

Thanks to those of you who looked through the Lost and Found box at church yesterday, and also checked out the dishes, etc. that have been left in the kitchen. I think you still have a chance to go through them this week, but after that they'll have somehow found their way to the Gaston Food Bank.

And a big thanks to those of you who came out Saturday morning to decorate the church for Christmas. Your help made a big difference!

Until next week,

I hope you all know how truly grateful I am for each one of you. I'm thankful for the many friendships I have, for the way we're able to support and encourage each other, and for all the opportunities we have to "do life" together.

Even though we'll all probably eat too much tomorrow, realize you'll most likely be hungry again by Saturday morning, and nothing but Janet's cinnamon rolls will be able to satisfy! Bring your own hot drink  (we'll provide the goodies) and meet us at the church at 10 AM to transform it into a beautiful space in which to celebrate the meaning of Christmas throughout the month of December.

Coming up the following Saturday, December 5th, is our WOW Christmas party. This year our theme is The Joy of Christmas
If you'd like to participate in the cookie exchange at 5 PM, bring two dozen of your favorite cookies and an extra tray. Our dinner and party will begin at 6 PM. Both events will be at Amy Rusaw's. Wear some Christmas finery (how fine is completely up to you), and bring a favorite Christmas food item. To make sure we don't get an overload of sweets, please check what is needed and sign up at

Are you missing any dishes, bowls, baking dishes, etc? There are several items that have been left behind in the church kitchen. Counter space is very limited there, as you know, so if things aren't claimed in the next week or two they will be given to the Gaston Food Bank. The same is true for items that are in the Lost and Found box by the sound booth. Please check to see if anything of yours has been misplaced.

The combined 4s, 5s, and Kindergarten Sunday School class (which averages around 14 children each week) is in need of another teacher or two to help out in that class. It only takes one week a month, so you're still able to be in the main service most of the time, but have the opportunity to serve each month. Let Janet know if you're able to fill that need.

Both The Perk and Common Grounds (women's Bible studies) will resume next Thursday. Nicole P. is bringing treats to The Perk at 9:30 AM, and at this point no one has signed up for Common Grounds at 6:30. Let me know (contact info is always at the end of the WOW-Zines) if you'd like to provide a treat for that. If not, it certainly won't hurt us to not have something to go along with our tea and coffee!

Tuesday, November 17, 2015 WOW-Zine

Good morning! It's been nearly a month since I last sent out a WOW-Zine, so it's time to get you caught up on a couple of things. Thanks so much for your prayers for my brother Daniel as he fights prostate cancer. He has a really rough road ahead of him, but is so thankful that he doesn't walk through this alone. It was my special joy to be in Southern California with him and his wife during this time. But it's certainly good to be back with you now!

Here are some up-coming dates to keep in mind:

Saturday, November 28th, 10 AM--Do you love to decorate for Christmas? Here's your chance to get a head start on doing so. Join us at the church to to help make it look festive for the Christmas season. I'm good at dragging out boxes of decorations from the closet, but not much else. So I'll do the grunt work and you can do the beautification part! Please bring your own hot drink.

Saturday, December 5th, at the Rusaw's--Women's Christmas Party--The Joy of Christmas!
Don ye now your favorite Christmas apparel, bring a wrapped $10 favorite gift, and your favorite Christmas food for our potluck. (A link to PerfectPotluck will be available next week, so we can make sure we have a savory combination of main dishes and sweets.) Please bring slippers or socks to wear inside.
Time: 5 PM for Cookie Exchange at Amy's--bring 2 dozen of your favorite Christmas cookies, along with an extra tray.
Time: 6 PM for the party. Carpooling is encouraged. We will meet behind the church at 5:30 for riding together to the party.

It was great to be back for our Bible studies last week. This week Carol R. has signed up to bring treats for Thursday morning at 9:30, and Anita for Thursday night at 6:30. We will not meet next week due to Thanksgiving. We almost finished Colossians
chapter 1 last week!In verse 24 Paul talks about the suffering of Christ and we had a good discussion about the suffering we experience in this life. I shared some things I'd gotten from desiringgod.org, talking about Christian suffering. A quote from a guy named David Powlison spoke to our hearts, and that's what I'll leave you with today. He said:

When you've passed through your own fiery trials, and found God to be true to what he says, you have real help to offer. You have firsthand experience of both his sustaining grace and his purposeful design. He has kept you through pain; he has reshaped you more into his image. What you are experiencing from God, you can give away in increasing measure to others. You are learning both the tenderness and the clarity necessary to help sanctify another person's deepest distress.

On a completely different note, I will be in Southern California for the next two weeks to help care for my youngest brother as he undergoes surgery for a very aggressive prostate cancer. He and his wife are strong believers and would appreciate all the prayer you'd like to give!

I will be here to lead our Bible studies this week, and others have volunteered to step in for the next couple of weeks. A big thank you to Janet, Carol G., and Natalie! I'm not sure if I'll be able to get a WOW-Zine out while I'm gone, so if you don't hear from me just remember that both studies are still meeting! This week Jaimie is bringing a treat for The Perk (Thursday from 9:30-11 AM) and Janet is taking care of goodies for Common Grounds (Thursday from 6:30-8 PM.)

Tuesday, October 13, 2015 WOW-Zine

A happy Tuesday morning to you! The fog we've started off the days with lately really remind me of one of the verses we looked at in Bible study last week. In Isaiah 44:22 God says, "I have swept away your offenses like a cloud, your sins like the morning mist." Just like the morning fog burns off, disappears, and can be found no more, so God deals with our confessed sin. We can live in a guilt-free zone!

Coming soon, to a home theater near you, is our WOW Movie Night at Karen Fordyce's home. Not this week, but the following Friday, October 23rd at 7 PM. We'll be watching the new movie of Cinderella. We understand this is something your daughters would probably want to watch too, but this is a WOMENS' NIGHT IN! Instead of your daughter, bring a snack to share and if you want a soda, BYOD. (Bring Your Own Drink.) If you rearrange those letters you can spell BODY, which we also want you to bring!!

Don't forget to join us at one of our weekly women's Bible studies, which meet on Thursdays. The Perk gathers from 9:30 to 11 AM, and Nicole P. will bring a treat to go along with our coffee and tea. That evening from 6:30 to 8 Common Grounds will meet, and Jody is providing something to nibble on during our study. We'll be looking at more verses in Colossians chapter 1, beginning with verse 15.

I'd like to leave you with this devotional I found:

SIGNS OF CHANGE ~

Fall has arrived. The signs have been around us for days. The hydrangeas are fading. Already I'm sweeping up oak leaves on the patio.  Pumpkins and mums dominate displays in floral shops. Razorback red (my home team; name your own), candy corn and Halloween costumes are out in full force, beckoning us to buy.

Instead of four hummingbirds, now 20+ compete for a place at our feeders as they prepare for the long flight South. One morning soon we'll wake up and they will be gone.
I must confess at first I resisted the thought of fall. It's been too hot. Where did summer go? I'm not ready. But it doesn't matter whether I'm ready or not. The hummers will fly south, and fall will come as surely as the sun will rise and set each day.

I don't want to be left behind, so I'm coming round. I've pulled out a wreath of autumn leaves and a fat little pumpkin. So far I've resisted the candy corn, but it sure tastes good with cocktail peanuts.

I don't always recognize when God is bringing a change of season into my life, but He is patient. As evidence stacks up, I'm learning to embrace the freshness and excitement of something new.

What about you? Can you remember a time when you suddenly realized He was bringing change to your life?

Change can be scary because only He knows what new paths will open before us. I hope we will all accept changing seasons and concentrate on what is next instead of looking back with longing. Remember, our God is trustworthy, and isn't change part of what makes life with Him so exciting?

Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?
Isaiah 43:19

Tuesday, September 29, 2015 WOW-Zine

Yep, it's that day of the week--WOW-Zine day! I hope this finds all of you doing well, enjoying the blessings of God, and responding in faith to the challenges He may be allowing in your life right now.

The purchase/sale of Rita's homes was only part of the story regarding the cancellation of her party.  Within in the last two weeks she learned that she has cancer, has had surgery, and will soon begin chemotherapy. Per her doctor's request she will be staying local, so escrow on the new house has stopped. This is a lot for anyone to deal with in such a short amount of time.  She has a lot of doctors appointments and decisions to make and is asking for prayer but also that support come through cards, emails, texts, etc, rather than visits and phone calls while she sorts things out. Please keep her in your prayers during this time.

The Perk meets Thursday morning from 9:30-11, with childcare available. Jaimie is providing snacks for our time together. That evening from 6:30-8 Common Grounds will gather for our study, and Jaimie is bringing treats for that too! (She's not sure which group she'll be able to attend due to work, so will make double goodies and send them to whichever one she can't come to. Smart lady!) We'll be in Colossians 1:12-14 this week.

Don't forget about the church-wide Harvest Party this Saturday from 5-8 PM at the Krautscheids' on Old Hiway 47. More information is in the Wapato Weekly, or can be found on the website for Wapato Valley Church. You can also sign up for the potluck there. It's a fun activity for your family and friends.

Coming up on Friday, Oct. 23rd at Karen's (7 PM) is our WOW Movie Night. This is always a fun, relaxing time to bring a goodie and enjoy a great movie together. Put it on your calendar now!

Tuesday, September 22, 2015 WOW-Zine

It's another week, with another chance to get involved in activities with the Women Of Wapato. The team and I really hope you find at least one place where you can plug in!

I ran this announcement last week, but Janet's phone number was wrong. So here's the correct information:
You're invited to a Going Away party for our own Rita de Groen, who is soon moving to Washington. Rita has been a part of our church and community for many years, and we're sad to see her go.
When: Saturday, Sept. 26th, 5:30 PM
Where: 2751 NW Phillip Rd. (Janet's house)
Hosted by: Karen and Janet
RSVP by: Wednesday the 23rd at 503-539-1518.

Both our women's Bible studies meet this week as usual. We're having rich sessions digging into the book of Colossians. You can join the study at any time. This week Nathalie is bringing snacks for The Perk (Thursday morning from 9:30-11.) That evening Common Grounds meets from 6:30-8, and Janet will be providing goodies for our time together.

Special Note: Nicole Chan has invited all of us ladies (kiddos too) over to her house for lunch right after The Perk this week (Thursday). What a fun idea! Her address is 4268 SW Anderson Rd., Forest Grove. (949-413-9048) This is for all women that can make it--not just ladies who attend The Perk.

Tuesday, September 15, 2015 WOW-Zine

Happy Tuesday, ladies. I hope your week has gotten off to a good start, and that you're enjoying the change in the weather.

Both The Perk and Common Grounds (our women's Bible studies) got off to a great start last week. Feel free to jump in this week! We're currently working our way through the first chapter of Colossians, with the challenge of finding a verse or two to memorize and share--your choice. This week Lauren signed up for treats for Common Grounds (Thursday at 6:30 PM), but so far no one volunteered for snacks for The Perk (Thursday at 9:30 AM.)

The monthly Craft Time is scheduled for Monday, September 21st, from 3-5 PM at the home of Carol Gross. (40080 SW Nelson Drive in Gaston. Out by Lauralwood.) Bring any craft project you're working on and enjoy a relaxing time with each other.

Tuesday, September 8, 2015 WOW-Zine

Hello, ladies! A lot of you are in the throes of getting kids off to school in the morning and finding a new schedule for your own life. Please consider this a personal invitation from me to you to meet with us at one of our women's Bible studies this year. If you join us at your earliest opportunity, it will be that much easier to consistently put it on your calendar and simply know that every Thursday you're taking some Me Time to learn more about God and how to apply His Word to your everyday life and challenges. And a wonderful side benefit is that you will develop deep friendships with women who really do care about you and who will help share the burdens you're dealing with.

This is the week that our studies resume after taking a bit of a break during the summer. Remember, everything is happening on Thursdays now! The Perk will meet at the church at 9:30 AM. We start with snacks (any volunteer to bring something tasty this week?) and childcare for young children is usually available. Bring along a couple of dollars to help pay for a sitter, please. We finish right around 11 AM. Common Grounds will meet at 6:30 in the evenings and run until around 8 PM. (I'm looking for a snack volunteer for this week--any takers?) There is no childcare provided for the evening session. We'll be starting off our new year by studying the book of Colossians--one of my favorites! There's no homework and no book to buy. You can jump in the study at any time. Just bring a notebook and your Bible and you'll be good to go!

The Women's Ministry Team will be meeting tomorrow night to start planning activities we'll offer you during this year. If you have any ideas of things you'd like to see included, shoot me a text or email. (My contact info is always at the end of the WOW-Zine.)

The monthly Craft Time is scheduled for Monday, September 21st, from 3-5 PM at the home of Carol Gross. (40080 SW Nelson Drive in Gaston. Out by Lauralwood.) Bring any craft project you're working on and enjoy a relaxing time with each other.

I was talking earlier about one of the perks of attending Bible study is the formation of deep friendships and people to stand beside you though the hard times we all face. When you know people who have to deal with the garbage of life, how do you react? Sometimes we have no idea what to do or say, and sometimes we err the opposite way and think we know exactly what they're going through and how they should fix it. Here's some good advice from our blogger friend, Holley Gerth.

Helping Someone When You’ve Never Been in Their Situation

Big Yellow Umbrella Card by DaySpring - Holley Gerth
I often get notes from people saying something like, “My friend/family member is going through a hard time but I don’t feel like I can help because I haven’t been through the same thing.” Here’s my response:“You don’t have to experience the same storm to know what it’s like to get wet.”
I’m certain you know what it’s like to feel soaked to the bone by discouragement, have fear thundering above you or watch a dream wash away. Don’t we all? It’s not our ability to duplicate details but to relate on a heart level that lets us have empathy and be able to encourage.
I once wrote a card for DaySpring that says:
I wish I had a big, yellow umbrella that would keep all the rain out of your life.
I would hold it over your head and the drops would splash, splash and you would never even feel it.
But I don’t have a big yellow umbrella, so I’ll walk through the rain with you.
When it comes to living that out, here are three ways you can walk through the rain with someone no matter what storm they’re facing:
1) Simply listen. When I did grief support groups I heard people say over and over again, “It was so comforting when someone just let me talk and cried with me.” When we’re hurting, what we need most isn’t answers; it’s to know we’re not alone.
2) Be a safe place. When someone shares their struggles with us, we’re to treat them with care like precious treasures. After all, it seems that’s what God does. “Put my tears into Your bottle; Are they not in Your book?” {Ps. 56:8}. These three C’s can help us remember how to do so: Nevercriticize or condemn. Always keep it confidential.
3) Don’t try to fix it. When I got a masters degree in counseling we were told over and over, avoid giving advice. We empower people most when we trust them to figure out their own lives with God’s help. We are simply there to be an encouragement and sounding board.
Ironically, the need to prove we’re useful can push us to talk too much and try too hard. When we feel that pressure, we can take a deep breath and remember we don’t have to be anyone’s God, Jesus or Holy Spirit. It’s not within our power to resolve the problem, change the circumstance or even make the pain go away. In other words, we can’t make the sun come out again.
That reality doesn’t mean we’re a failure. It simply means we’re not God.
So what is success when it comes to helping others in our lives? After hearing from thousands of hurting people I’ve come to believe it’s simply this: Having the courage to step into the rain–even if it’s not our storm.
So ladies, here's to a year of taking turns holding umbrellas for each other!

Until next week,
Sherrie Ashcraft, Women's Ministry Director

Monday, August 31, 2015 WOW-Zine

Good morning, ladies. I'm headed out the door to the coast in a few minutes, so this will be very short. (Which is the opposite of me!) I just want to remind you of a few things.

The Perk and Common Grounds (our two women's Bible studies) resume NEXT week, Thursday the 10th. Remember that they will both meet on the same day of the week this year. These are very casual studies, meaning there is no book to buy or homework to do, and you can join us at any time. Just bring a Bible and notebook. We'll be working our way through the book of Colossians. The Perk meets from 9:30 AM to 11 AM (childcare provided) and Common Grounds meets from 6:30 PM to 8 PM.

Time is quickly running out to register for the Beth Moore Simulcast. Your last opportunity to sign up for the one being held  on Saturday, September 12, at Grace Baptist Church in Newberg, is this Friday, the 4th. Go to this link to get more information about what the day entails:

Tuesday, August 25, 2015 WOW-Zine

Hello there! If you read last week's WOW-Zine and remember everything you read, you don't need to bother to keep reading! This is basically a rehash (kind of like leftovers!) of last week's information. But if for some reason you never got around to checking out last week's edition, you'll want to be sure to peruse this now.

Both Common Grounds and The Perk, which are our women's Bible study groups, will resume on Thursday, September 10th. Yes, you read that right. Both groups will meet on Thursdays this year. (That frees the youth group to be able to meet in the sanctuary on Wednesday evenings and have the space they need for their activities.) So those of you who used to come on Wednesday nights will need to start programming your brain AND your calendar to come on Thursday nights instead.

This evening is  the One Heart: PDX concert for women and teen girls only. Apparently tickets are still available online, as well as at the door. Here's the info:

One Heart: PDX

August 25 @ 6:00 pm

| $12
ONE HEART: PDX is an all-women’s event where women from around our city are gathering together to have a conversation on unity, friendship and the importance of community AND for a concert and time of worship…TOGETHER!
ONE HEART: PDX is all about…
The Music… The Music…Three unique and influential Portland artists are coming together to provide the music for ONE HEART: PDX. The evening will include original tunes from all three singer/songwriters ranging from soul to indie and folk sounds, as well as classic hymns and worship songs. This will be a fresh collaboration you will not want to miss.

We've enjoyed several Beth Moore Bible studies throughout our years together. Some of us even got to see her in person in Eugene. Well now I have the next-best thing for you--enjoying Beth's ministry through a simulcast. This event will happen on Saturday, September 12, at Grace Baptist Church in Newberg. Go to this link to get more information about what the day entails:

You can register there online, and the cost is only $25, including snacks and lunch. Last day to register is September 4th. I got my ticket and hope you will too!

I hope you're enjoying the last few days before school starts and life becomes a different kind of busy!
