Happy Columbus Day! What are you doing to make this a memorable holiday in the life of your family? I'd really like to know. Perhaps you're baking and decorating cakes to look like the three boats that sailed the ocean blue. Perhaps you're taking a cruise to commemorate the day. Whatever it is, leave a comment about it and you might win a prize at the next Common Grounds! (And it doesn't even have to be the truth!)

We had a wonderful gaggle of twenty-five women at C. G. last week. (There's another prize for anyone who can come up with a new word to describe a "gaggle" of women. I've got to stop writing, or I'll be giving away prizes right and left!) Our next meeting is NEXT Wednesday, the 20th. I think we're all enjoying learning about Self Talk, Soul Talk. It's nice to know we're not alone in this issue, isn't it?

Many people (okay, just one--hi, Adrienne!) have asked me to post a few notes here on the blog, so that if women have to miss a week they're able to know what's going on. We talked about borrowing beliefs from other people (perhaps labels put on you by parents or friends) that don't really fit, but we wear them anyway. We looked up several scriptures on the importance of words. If you'd like to check them out, you'll find them in Prov.16:24 and 25:11. We spent most of our time discussing II Corinthians 10:4,5. It's a wonderful word picture of how we're to handle our thoughts. And though I say I don't give homework, I am in this case. We're all memorizing those two verses.
For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.  II Cor. 10: 4,5

Don't forget our "Life is Short" night, coming up on Friday, October 22nd. That's when we'll meet at the ice cream shop in Forest Grove at 6:30 for dessert, then come to the church afterward for "healthy?" snacks (potluck style) and games. You won't want to miss out on this!

So, that's it for this week. Make sure to leave some comments and perhaps win some prizes. Have a wonderful week, everyone!

  5. You gys are making me laugh out loud by getting into the spirit of things!! Great job!

Chrissy, I was SURE you had some such adventured planned. Happy sailing! And you're right, I forgot to say anything about retreat. I'll do that in a separate comment in just a minute.

Nicole, I LOVED your chocolate ships comment! Enjoy that gaggle of zuchinni bread. (Though some people would just plain "gag" at zuchinni!)

Nathalie, awesome job you're doing with your kids survival skills! And I'm so thankful that we live in the age of computers so we can keep in touch during your dangerous ocean voyage. Maybe you'll have time to keep adding to your great dictionary definitions!

  6. ladies, as Chrissy so graciously pointed out, I neglected to put info about our spring retreat in my post this week. So I'll do it here instead! Our retreat is the first weekend of March, and will cost $80. We don't have the registration forms ready yet, but will very soon. Start saving your money now, as you have to be paid in full to register. We will have it open to women from Wapato and Common Grounds only for the first couple of months. If we still have open slots, you will be free to invite other friends after the middle of January. I'll keep you posted on how things are filling up.
To check out the fantabulous place we're staying at, go to
wandksims@juno.com,we4reeds@sterling.net,Pam Graham ; and put in # 309670. You won't believe your eyes, but I've been there and checked it out and it's for real!!

  7. Oh, my, I can't believe it! I forgot I had copied a couple of email addresses, and that's what showed up when I pasted in!! I would love to be able to blog and post one week and not make a mistake!!
So, you should go to http://www.VRBO.com and put in #309670. (hangs red face in shame)

  8. My goodness, Sherrie! I was thinking you were crazy with that "address" we were supposed to go to to find the retreat house! Can't you delete your post and not have to hang your face in shame? I am all about hiding mistakes! ;oP And on that note, I'll explain why I am NOT celebrating "Columbus" day (this said in a sarcastic tone): because I refuse to celebrate someone who uses a fake name (Crisstofa Corumbo), who was addicted to opium, and who brought syphilis to Europe. Definitely some things he should have hung his head in shame for, or America should now for celebrating such a character! I'm just kidding- I really have no plans, so I'm making excuses...
And are we supposed to use "gaggle" in some other way, or come with another name for the crazy group of ladies at WoW? I'm so confused. But that's nothing new...
'Cause I'm thinking we could call ourselves a clowder (cats), a charm (finches), a skulk (foxes!), a bouquet (pheasants?- I like bouquet...), or an exaltation (larks) of ladies. As long as we stay away from a brood (hens), a trip (goats), a litter (pigs), a murder (crows), or a pod (whales!). Sometimes we snack so much that might be fitting... JK!
As far as using "gaggle" in my everyday life, I would say "I just taught a gaggle of children a fun science lesson, and everyone is still in one piece!"

  9. Amy, I prefer to trumpet my mistakes to the whole world, I guess! It makes everyone else feel better about themselves. (They say, "I may be pretty bad off, but at least I'm not like Sherrie!!") You had great suggestions for "gaggle". I really liked charm, bouquet, and exaltation. I'll have to use those at various times! If you read my post again, you'll see that I wasn't talking about renaming WOW, but of how to describe 25 women. And congrats on your successful science lesson!

  11. Kristen, thanks for letting us know of this opportunity to pray for your grandma. Wow, such a terrible thing to have happen. God can definitely still reach her even during her final hours, as I know you know. I am praying that you will be His light for her and your entire family. Will be praying that she makes a decision to ask Christ into her heart. Blessings on you, and an abundant peace.
