This is ridiculous! Here it is, officially summer, and I just had to turn the heater on to take the chill out of the house!! What's up with that? I hope you're staying warm enough and finding things for the kids to do. Speaking of which, you don't want to miss out on Wapato's Vacation Bible School, which begins tomorrow morning and runs through Friday. It's FREE, which is getting hard to find nowadays. Registration begins at the church Tuesday at 8:45 AM, and children must be registered in order to attend. Sessions run from 9-11:30 AM. This is always a great time for the kids in our community.
It's time for us ladies to relax this week. Our annual WOW Hot Tub Party is this Wednesday, 7 PM, at Ashberry Lane. (Let me know if you need directions.) Bring a snack (healthy or otherwise) and come enjoy a secluded soak. The youth group will be meeting upstairs, but don't worry, they won't be able to see us!
Next week we have a special outing for women and children. Thursday, the day after The Fourth of July, we'll meet at the Tillamook Forestry Center (on the highway to Tillamook) for a picnic and wading in the creek. Most of you have probably been there before, but it's always a fun place to take the kids. There's a wonderful hands-on museum there, as well as a fire tower they (and you) can climb to the top. (You might be interested to know that my dad worked for the Forest Service, and when I was a little baby I lived in one of those towers!) Surely by July 5th we should have warm weather! Please let me know if you're coming, as I don't want to make the trip and find I'm the only one. We'll meet there at noon.
There are no Bible studies this week or next because of VBS and Fourth of July. (That's why we're having the special events instead.) For those of you who ordered books but haven't received them yet, it's because I haven't got them. I'll let you know as soon as they arrive. If you haven't attended either Common Grounds or The Perk these past two weeks, you're really missing out on a wonderful study! Come join us during the second week of July, at which point we'll be meeting every week for six weeks in a row to finish the study on our spiritual armor.
Holy Sweat, our new exercise class, is going strong and we're getting stronger with every workout! Because of the VBS schedule, Holy Sweat is meeting at 7:30 AM this week, but usually we meet at 8 AM on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Bring light weights, water, and a mat or blanket to make the floorwork more comfortable. We've got a good group of women attending, but there's always room for more. It just makes you feel good to start the day off like that!
Well, I think that's all I've got for you this time. Hope to see you often this week!

Monday, June 18, 2012 WOW-Zine
Hello, ladies! It's time for a look at what's coming up this week and in the near future for the Women of Wapato. Our summer program started off with a bang last week at our 8-week Bible studies called Your Strong Suit. Both Common Grounds and The Perk were well attended, and from the feedback I got from several ladies, this topic (our spiritual armor) is of great interest. I've had to order more workbooks ($11 with shipping), and I can order more if need be. Let me know right away if you'd like one. I think they're well-worth it.
This week's opportunities:
MONDAY
You already missed it! Our new exercise class, Holy Sweat, started off with a huge flop (which may be what happens to your body if you don't come!) this morning. I was the only one there!! I don't like it when that happens, so please show up for the next one. Pretty please??
WEDNESDAY
8 AM--Holy Sweat at the church (bring water and light weights)
6:30 PM--Common Grounds at the church. If you have the workbook for our study, do lesson two before coming. For those who don't have a workbook, come anyway!! Remember to bring your own drinks during the summer, and if anyone wants to provide a snack, we won't turn them away! We'll start the discussion time around 6:45, followed by the teaching on the DVD. We'll be completely done by 8:30 at the latest.
THURSDAY
9:30 AM--The Perk. Those of you there last week know what a great time we had. We, too, will be doing lesson two. Again, bring your own drinks. We'll be through by 11:30, after a fantastic start to your day.
FRIDAY
8 am--Holy Sweat (water and light weights)
NEXT WEEK:
Holy Sweat will meet, but because of VBS neither of the Bible studies will be meeting. But we will have ...
a Hot Tub Party (women only) on Wednesday, June 27th, at 7 PM, Ashberry Lane. Bring a snack to share, but drinks will be provided. This is always a fun evening of relaxation, so I hope you can come.
In closing, think about this:
Hospitality in our home is usually centered on food. With a very busy
life, that seems to be the best situation for connecting with people –
around a meal.
But even if it’s just a glass of water, or an evening with dessert – with our without a full meal – we’ve found that cherished time with friends is just about being together.
You can take our house away, our garden, pool or yard. We are still who we are – our family unit revolves around who we are as individuals and not around what we have.
I read this Mother Theresa quote awhile back: Kindness has converted more people than zeal, science, or eloquence. Around that same time I was able to meet with a new, very special family who popped in one night for a visit. They were on their way to California to stay for a few weeks, where they were part of a “house swap.”
As we talked and got to know this precious family, something clicked. We connected with these strangers as we opened up our lives and became real with them. We showed love, concern and interest in each other’s lives!
Later I received an email from this friend, who shared with me that although the home they were staying in was quite lovely, it was rather cold and sterile. She shared with me:
… there are many warm and open people and your family definitely fits into that. This house may rock but it certainly doesn’t have much soul from what we are feeling. Your house dripped of soul and kindness …
These words have stuck in my head for a month now. When we meet strangers and show hospitality, how do we come across to them? And what is the essence of our home? Does it drip with soul and kindness?
I don’t know about you, but this is challenging to me. As Eugene Peterson says in The Message’s Phil 4:15, “Provide people with a glimpse of good living and of the living God.”
Good living to me is about loving God and people. It’s as simple as that.
What does it mean to you?

Monday, June 11, 2012 WOW-Zine
Happy Monday, ladies! Enjoy the last Monday before the kids get out of school for summer vacation! I hope you've got some wonderful plans for summer--time spent with family and friends, perhaps a getaway trip, and definitely some time deepening your relationship with God. After all, summer is not a time for vacation from the Lord, is it?!
To help with your goal of connecting in a meaningful way with friends and God during these next few months, I'm offering a great study on spiritual warfare, called Your Strong Suit. This is a DVD study with a workbook (which many of you have ordered.) You don't have to have the workbook to attend the study. We will discuss some of the questions covered in the workbook, as well as watch the teaching on the DVD. I don't know about you, but there are often times when I try to take on the challenges of daily life in my own strength. Not a wise thing to do! I'm looking forward to what the Lord has to teach me during this 8-week series.
We'll kick the study off this week with Common Grounds meeting at 6:30 Wednesday night, and The Perk at 9:30 Thursday morning. This week only, Common Grounds will meet at Ashberry Lane due to a school event occurring at the church during our class time. I was able to hand out the workbooks to many of you at church yesterday, but if you weren't there, contact me for a way for me to give it to you. If not, you won't get it until class time, which means you won't be able to do anything ahead of time. (By the way, during the summer you'll need to bring your own drinks with you, except for this Wednesday.) We're not doing an official sign-up for treats, but you can bring something if you'd like to.
For the rest of June, this is what our schedule looks like:
Common Grounds meets on the 13th and 20th
The Perk meets on the 14th and 21st
We won't have any study during the week of VBS (June 26-29). But our WOW hot tub party will be at Ashberry Lane at 7 PM Wednesday, June 27th. That's always a fun time to bring your cellulite, spider veins, and poochy tummy to join a bunch of other women that deal with the same problems, and enjoy a relaxing evening together. Oh, and bring some goodies too!
In my ever-present quest to help you in various areas of your life, I'm here to tell you about our new exercise class that will begin next week. Yes, I'm talking about Holy Sweat, which will meet most Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 8 AM at the church. We've done Zumba for the past year, and now it's time to move on to some other options. I spent some of my birthday money to buy four exercise CD's--Jillian Michaels: No More Trouble Zones; Denise Austin: Sculpt and Burn Body Blitz; Jackie Warner: One on One Training; and Julianne Hough;, Cardio Ballroom Dancing. I think that's a good enough variety to find something for everyone.
So next Monday, the 18th, at 8 AM, please join me at the church for a fun physical start to your summer! Bring a water bottle, light weights if you have them (2-5 lbs). We'll have floor work for some of these CD's, so if you have a mat, you could bring that too. Or just a blanket like the one you take to the beach. Wear comfortable clothes, and don't bother with hair or makeup! Just come "enjoy" some Holy Sweat!

Women of Wapato, Monday, June 4, 2012 WOW-Zine
It's late in the afternoon as I'm starting this. I kinda played around with the idea of waiting to write tomorrow, as I'm still recuperating from celebrating my 60th birthday yesterday, and you know it takes old people a longer time to recuperate!! But then I remembered that I'm really still young and I should get this written after all! Thanks to all of you who were at church yesterday to join in my surprise birthday party. (Well, the birthday wasn't a surprise to me--I knew I had one--but the party sure was!) Thanks to all of you who helped my dear husband pull it off. I don't know exactly who all was involved, but I know many of you provided delicious sandwiches, Laura Taylor's cake was absolutely beautiful, plus so tasty, and Nathalie's signs all over the place were so much fun! Thanks for the gifts and the cards, but most especially, for the love. You all made me feel so treasured and special, and that's the best gift of all. I love each of you!
There's nothing much going on this week in the women's ministry department, but next week begins our summer Bible study called Your Strong Suit. Nineteen of you have told me you wanted a copy of the workbook, so I've ordered 20. Let me know if you're that last person wanting a copy. It's only $10, plus an extra dollar for shipping if you'd like to cover that. We'll kick off the study with Common Grounds on Wednesday, June 13th at 6:30. Extra important to remember that we will meet at Ashberry Lane (my house) that night because of an eighth grade graduation event taking place at the church that evening. Let me know if you need directions. The following morning,( June 14th) The Thursday Perk will meet at 9:30 at the church. Please understand that you don't have to buy the workbook to attend the studies. Some people (I'm usually one of them) don't do well with homework during the week. Everyone is welcome. We're going to be super casual during our summer study, so bring your own drinks along. We're not going to ask people to bring a snack or anything, but if you happen to feel in the mood to bring food, feel free! You can attend Wednesday night or Thursday morning, whichever works best for that particular week. Make sure to copy off the schedule that I'll have posted at the end of this blog, so you'll know the plans for the summer.
Speaking of summer plans, there are some changes going on as far as Zumba is concerned. We've (Janet, for the most part) basically been offering it for nearly a year. It's time to change things up and get out of our Zumba rut! So starting this week, there is no Zumba or anything else going on. But, beginning Monday, June 18th, we'll start a new type of exercise class which will meet at either 7:30 or 8 AM on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Those who commit to attending will be the ones who get to vote as to which of those two times will work best for them. We will probably do several different types of exercise DVDs throughout the summer, so if you have some you have on hand and would recommend, please let me know. Several of us are participating in a weight loss competition this month, and exercising at least three times a week can really help. Please let me know if you're interested for this summer.
I heard from Janet today that VBS is being moved back this year, but just by one day. It's still the last week of June, but instead of beginning on Monday, it will run Tuesday through Friday, June 26th--29th. I'm thinkin' she can probably use some more help, so please let her know if you're available. It's a great way of making a spiritual impact in the lives of children in our community.
Here's the WOW schedule for the summer. Please remember that all events are for women only unless it specifically states children are invited.
