Tuesday, May 27, 2013

I hope you all had a wonderful Memorial Day weekend. It's hard to believe it's already the end of May, isn't it? Seems that it just started.

Speaking of starting, we've got a new Bible studies series beginning this week. I'll be teaching on the subject Fingerprints of God, based on a book by the same name written by Jennifer Rothschild. (She's the one who wrote Self Talk, Soul Talk that we did several years ago.) The aim of this study will be to help us recognize God's  touch on our lives. I think we sometimes get so busy we become unaware of how intimately involved He is in our day-to-day lives. This eight-week study will give us a chance to take a closer look at various sections of the Bible as we share and discuss with each other.

We provide two options for your Bible study pleasure--Common Grounds meets Wednesday at 6:30 PM, and The Perk convenes at 9:30 Thursday mornings. Both groups meet at the church, with child care provided on Thursdays. This week Amy R. is on for Thursday treats, and Stephanie will serve as our MIC.

And while I'm talking about our studies, let me give a very special and heartfelt thanks to Rita for filling in for me last week while I was out of town. I so appreciated her willing heart, and I've heard from several of you that things went well. It's not easy to lead a study, especially when one is not used to doing so.

Things are pretty quiet on the Women's Ministry front right now, so let me just let me leave you with this lighthearted devotional.

Learning to Have Fun - I believe God created fun and humor because He knew we would need the soul medicine it would provide.
http://www.justbetweenus.org/uploads/learningtohavefun.jpgBy Shelly Esser
Some years ago my mom, sisters, and I attended a huge women’s conference in the Chicago area.  We were looking forward to a weekend away for spiritual refreshment and fun.  A few minutes into the main session, we began to smell something terrible.  The familiar odor proceeded to get stronger as the session went on.  We exchanged looks among ourselves, trying to ignore what was going on in back of us until we heard the clunk of a tin can.

Unbelievably, a woman had just finished eating a can of tuna!  What’s worse, she got out a second can and proceeded to finish that off, discarding the empty can next to the other one under my sister’s seat!  Now, throughout the rest of the conference, it wasn’t just the smell that was troublesome, but the constant clunking of tin cans every time the woman moved her feet.

I can understand having a snack, but a can of tuna in the middle of an auditorium filled with thousands of women?  Somehow, it was very difficult to sing praise songs!  We tried to compose ourselves.  Needless to say, we laughed the entire way home and still chuckle every time we think about that conference!

Had I not had the upbringing I’ve had where it was modeled to enjoy life, we might have left feeling upset at that experience.  Instead, we chose to see the humor in it and laugh about it.

When was the last time you had a really good belly-aching, tear-dripping laugh?  Or just some plain old fun?  For that matter, what is your theology of fun?  Perhaps you’re thinking it’s not spiritual to have fun, or that it’s not important in a Christian’s life, so you don’t make the time.  I believe God created fun and humor because He knew that we would need the soul medicine it would provide in a fallen world.

There’s something that God built into creation that is enjoyable.  Imagine the fun God must have had when He created all the animals.  Next time you’re at the zoo just look at all the zany creatures; there can be no doubt that we have a fun God and that there is a purpose for laughter in our lives.  Since we are created in the image of God as Genesis 1:26 says, then having a sense of humor is part of how we’re wired.

If you have a hard time discovering fun, surround yourself with those people who live life joyfully.  My life has been lavished with people who enjoy life.  And they are contagious!  Even when there has been nothing to laugh about, God has helped me to find the humor in some small thing.

Growing up, fun was a lifestyle.  My mom was always doing crazy things to help us enjoy life, and I have tried to carry that gift into my adulthood.  Ministry and living in today’s culture can get so heavy and laden with burdens.  Fun gives us a break so we can carry on in the midst of them. Proverbs 17:22 tells us that to be able to laugh is good medicine for our beaten down souls.  I believe fostering fun is about trying to celebrate life in the midst of everything we do – work, relationships, life’s circumstances, and ministry.  If you look around, there is always something to laugh about or enjoy.  Ecclesiastes 3:4 says there is “a time to weep and a time to laugh.”  We have the “time to weep” part down, but unfortunately not the “time to laugh.”

God’s design for fun is further demonstrated in Genesis 2:2-3 which says, “By the seventh day God had finished the work He had been doing; so on the seventh day He rested from all His work.  And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it He rested from all the work of creating that He had done.”  Imagine declaring a day of no work as “holy.”  We don’t often see fun, play, or leisure as “holy” do we?  So what is that weekly day of rest to be about?  It’s a day for abstaining from work and, instead, being concerned with worshipping God and attending to proper relaxation of mind and body.

Fun is simply having a sense of humor or lightness; taking a recess from the responsibilities of life through recreation and relaxation.  It’s making time for ourselves and others.  Play and rest need to be given a proper place of dignity because we have been designed by God with a need to play.

How can we enjoy life when it seems like a never ending stretch of work?  All work and no play makes for a very heavy existence.  God fashioned us with a need for enjoyment and fun.  He not only gave us a weekly day for our bodies to rest and relax, but on top of that He declared it “holy.”  So give yourself permission to have some holy fun!

Until next week,

Tuesday, May 13, 2014 WOW-Zine

What a glorious day, huh? I hear the rain is supposed to come back over the weekend, so make sure you get out and enjoy this weather while you can. Yesterday was my Sabbath, and I enjoyed pulling weeds and planting flowers. What do you like to do to relax? I hope you're able to make time to do whatever it is.

Thanks to all of you who signed up right away to provide meals for the Steele family. I know it is really appreciated. The only day still unprovided for is Saturday, so if you'd like to fill that gap, just go to
http://www.takethemameal.com/meals.php?t=FZPB7060 and put your name in.

We're continuing our Bible study on Cultivating Contentment this week, and I really hope you can join us. Both studies meet at the church--Common Grounds at 6:30 Wednesday night, and The Perk on Thursday morning at 9:30. You don't have to do any prep ahead of time--just show up with your Bible and perhaps a notebook. Amy R. is on for treats this Thursday, with Keisha filling the role of Mother In Charge (MIC) for childcare. I will be out of town next week, so you'll be having a guest teacher at both studies--Rita! It's so nice to have someone willing to fill in for me while I'm gone.

With Kristen having given birth last week, Wapato now seems to be taking a family-expansion breather until our next round of babies starts up in the fall. So this seems like the perfect time to let you know about a change as far as showers go. The ladies who have been involved in hosting both bridal and baby showers are feeling the need to remove some of the things on their plates. (This is known as "activity dieting". I just made that up!) Planning showers takes a lot of work, and so many of us are busy on the weekends with family activities and unable to attend the showers. Your Women's Ministry Team met last week and discussed this situation, and we agree that it's in the best interest of all of us to let friends host showers if they would like, but to not have them be a Wapato sponsored event. So if you're having a baby and a friend would like to host a shower for you in a private home, go for it! You can personally invite people you'd like to attend, but it will not go out to the whole church. It's actually a retro idea--the way showers were done waaay back when I was a young woman. Women will still be recognized with a gift card and meals (for babies), but we'll let you make it more personal as far as throwing a shower goes.

Until next time,

Tuesday, May 6, 2014 WOW-Zine

Good morning, my friends! It's good to have a chance to stop by and visit with you for just a few minutes. I know you're all very busy, so I won't take long. But I do want to keep you informed as to what is going on in our women's ministry.

Babies--that's what's going on! (No, not from me. This is NOT an impending birth announcement!) Chrissy had Braxton a few weeks ago, and Laura Cornils gave birth to Archer last week. Not to mention that Kristen Steele will be having a little girl very soon. In addition to our new mommies being given a gift card from Women's Ministry as an expression of our happiness for them, we also like to provide meals for these new moms. Those of you who have had a child may remember what an exhausting, wearing time it was right after your baby was born. For our new moms, not having to worry about preparing dinner for their family is a huge boon.

I provide you with an opportunity to sign up to provide meals through a website. We currently need a meal for tomorrow night (Wednesday) for the Cornils family, who live in Forest Grove. I'd love to have more of you involved in bringing meals so that we don't have the same women doing it each time. It's truly a blessing to you, as well as to the family, when you serve in this way. It doesn't have to be fancy, or even homemade. If you'd like to help for tomorrow night, just follow this link.
 http://www.takethemameal.com/meals.php?t=UFEO9931&welcome=1

And if someone else beats you there, know that you'll soon have another opportunity!

Oh, I want to let you know some really good news. Those of you who were at our retreat last month will remember that instead of doing gifts for Secret Sisters we combined our money for World Vision. We contributed $285 that weekend! At the mini retreat this past weekend, we added another $60 from the women there. So that gives us a grand total of $345. What's really great is that this will be augmented times ten by different corporations to provide new clothing for children around the world. So in effect, by choosing to give up a little gift from one of the women at either retreat, we were able to give $3,450. Doesn't that feel good??!

Both Common Grounds and The Perk meet this week. I think you all probably know the details about both those Bible studies. If you have any questions, just ask me. (My contact information is always included at the end of the WOW-Zine.) This week Barbara is bringing treats for our Wednesday night study, and Cassie for Thursday morning, with Carol G. acting as our MIC. We're all being challenged as we learn to Cultivate Contentment.

I told you this WOW-Zine would only take a couple minutes to read. However, it takes longer to act upon! I hope you choose to help with a meal, attend a Bible study, and participate in some of the different opportunities we provide throughout the year. My team met last night, and we'll have a couple fun things going on throughout the summer, so I'll let you know about those later.

Until next week,

Tuesday, April 29, 2014 WOW-Zine

Good sunny morning, friends. This is going to be a short WOW-Zine, as I want to finish preparing the Bible study for this week, and then get outside in this glorious weather! Yesterday my car did it's first automatic-turn-into-a-nursery for the season, and I've got plants to get into the ground. I love this time of year!

This is your last chance to let me know if you plan on attending the mini retreat at my house this Friday evening and Saturday. We're going to have a great time together, I'm sure.

In case some of you missed the first announcement, the Feminini-Tea, which was scheduled for May, has been cancelled. There were too many other things going on. We'll kick things off in the fall with a special time together.

Both of our Bible studies meet this week as usual. Neva signed up to bring treats for Common Grounds, which meets at 6:30 Wednesday night. Those of you who attend The Perk on Thursday morning at 9:30 will need to be sure to eat breakfast at home, because no one signed up to bring snacks! Karen will be the MIC this week.

In view of the wonderful weather forcasted for this week, let me leave you with these thoughts from Holley Gerth:

What Season is Your Heart in Today?Holley2014-04-24 14:00

Heart season by Holley Gerth
Spring is just coming fully to the trees behind my house. Branches are becoming homes. I watch squirrels and birds build nests with mouths full of leaves and perhaps hearts full of dreams.
We all welcome spring with open arms–it’s a time of hope and joy after a long, dark winter. A reprieve before the stretched-out, hot summer. If we could, many of us would choose spring outside all year long.
But that’s not how the seasons work. The trees need time to let go in the fall. They need time to be quiet and grow deeper roots in winter. They need the intense sunshine of summer. All are part of the rhythm that keeps them living and growing.
I tend to always want it to be spring inside too. I love the dreaming and the doing, the wildflower adventures. I resist the stillness and the in-between seasons. But lately God is whispering to me that it can’t always be spring. All of the seasons have their place and purpose. All have gifts to offer. All are necessary.
Especially when I find myself in winter, I wonder if I’m as valuable to God. What am I giving? What am I producing? I try to manufacture an early spring out of to-do-lists and projects and going-here-and-there.
But God doesn’t ask that of me. He sees what I can’t in winter–the growth going on beneath the surface. The silence. The preparing. The drawing in of what my heart needs so that when spring comes I will be able to grow, to give, to bear fruit again.
What season are you in today?
If you’re in fall…let go.
If you’re in winter…rest.
If you’re in spring…grow.
If you’re in summer…take care of yourself so you don’t burn out.
“For everything there is a season. Eccl. 3:1″
The seasons of our hearts may change but this always stays the same:God loves us. He knows our circumstances. He understands our needs. He’s with us and caring for us…every day of our lives. And spring will come again.

Tuesday, April 22, 2014 WOW-Zine

I hope you all had a wonderful Easter celebrating the resurrection of our Lord. It was great to be able to attend both the Good Friday service and the Sunday service with so many of our church family. We need to remember to celebrate our new life in Christ every day, not just once a year.

At the end of church I noticed that little Braxton Tuning was making his Wapato debut. What a cutie he is! Don't forget we're providing meals for the Tunings this week, and we still have a few days available for you to sign up at
http://www.takethemameal.com/meals.php?t=HXUI3580&welcome=1. Chrissy's dad is visiting them, so that's why it says there are three adults and three children to provide for.

We're continuing a very practical Bible study entitled Cultivating Contentment. Have you ever tried to go 24-hours without complaining one eensy weensy bit? It's harder than it sounds, yet something we all need to work on. Come join us at Common Grounds on Wednesdays at 6:30 P.M. or at The Perk on Thursdays at 9:30 A.M.  No one has signed up for treats on Wednesday, so let me know if you'd like to bring something, or if we should all diet!! Carol R. is bringing the snack on Thursday morning, and Karen F. is the MIC. Thanks, ladies!

The mini retreat is nearly here--the first weekend of May. So far I just have four ladies who have told me they're coming, though I easily may have missed someone. I have Lori A., Keisha, Christine, and Charlotte. l have room for more, so please let me know if you'd like to attend. I'll be sending special letters out to you attendees later in the week, with the schedule and the information you'll want to know. This will be very relaxed and laid back. There's no way we can do all the extra things that were incorporated in the main retreat, but we'll have fun and get to watch the video of the teaching sessions. Cost is just $10 and can be given to me at any time between now and then. Make checks payable to the church and just write "mini retreat" in the memo section. Remember, non-mobile babies are welcome!

Just a little heads up--our Bible studies will continue throughout most of the summer. We'll probably go through July, then take the month of August as a breather before starting back up by mid-September.

And now, some encouragement from my favorite blogger:

Finding Hope in Unexpected PlacesHolley2014-04-16 14:00

Sara Torbett - Stronger
Suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. Romans 5:3-4
When I first read the verse above, I wondered if my Bible had a typo. Wasn’t hope supposed to be at the beginning of the list? That’s certainly where I wanted it to be.
I didn’t like the idea of going through suffering, perseverance, and character to get to hope.
My thoughts reflect our culture today. We view hope as an emotion rather than an outcome of choices we make. We also think hope should be automatic. Then when we don’t find it right away, we despair. But this passage makes it clear that hope is a process.
The first step in that process is suffering. Loss is a part of life. We’ll all endure hardship and heartache on this side of heaven. When we suffer, we have two choices: press on or give up. Jim Rohn once said, “We all must suffer from one of two pains: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret.”
If we choose discipline and perseverance, then this pattern gradually becomes part of who we are—our character. Character doesn’t change based on circumstances or who is watching at the moment. As Dwight L. Moody said, “Character is what you are in the dark.”
Character also becomes a light in the dark because it eventually results in hope. This kind of hope is not a vague feeling or wish. Instead it’s a deep knowledge that you and God can get through anything together. That’s the heart of hope: choosing to walk with God through the valleys of life and finding that He will never leave you–and that you will never leave Him either.
We all wonder how our faith will fare when challenges come our way. If you’re still reading this, my guess is you’re choosing perseverance and character. You’ve faced what you never wanted, and your faith is surviving, perhaps even thriving. Even if you have doubts, fears, and many difficult moments, you’re pressing on and moving forward. And I’m cheering you on with every step…no matter how small or slow.
Take heart, friend, you are doing better than you know. Jesus is with you. Your sisters are for you. And hope is on its way.
Until next week,

Tuesday, April 15, 2014

I know it's late in the day to hear from me, but a lot of you probably don't check your e-mail until the evening anyway. It's taking me a couple of days to recuperate from the wonderful retreat many of us got to experience this past weekend. If you weren't there ... we missed you! And you'll have another opportunity next April.

We're back to our regular schedule for Bible study now. One group (Common Grounds) meets on Wednesday from 6:30 PM to 8. Then on Thursday mornings from 9:30 to 11 The Perk meets. Both groups are studying how to cultivate contentment. This week at The Perk, Karen is bringing something yummy, and Stephanie will be the Mother In Charge (MIC) of childcare.

CHANGE OF PLANS! CHANGE OF PLANS!!
The tea that I've been telling you about is not going to happen next month after all. Turns out that day was not working for a lot of people. We're going to wait and do something probably in early September, whether it's a tea, or a luncheon, or ....

Be watching for a sign-up to provide meals for Chrissy and Bobby Tuning and their family as they welcome their newest member, Braxton. Congratulations, you guys! Meals will begin next week.

Wedding bells rang on a cold, snowy Saturday back in February for our newest bride, Linda Palacios. Now we have an opportunity to give her an April shower this Saturday at 3 PM at the church. Let Laura F. know if you're coming. David and Linda are registered at Target.

Don't forget about the mini retreat I'm offering at my house on May 2nd and 3rd. We recorded the speaker at our retreat this past weekend, and I'll be sharing that video with you on Friday night and Saturday. Cost is only $10 and non-mobile babies are welcome. Just let me know if you'd like to come.

And now, like I often do, I'll leave you with a devotional thought by blogger Holley Gerth. I know a lot of you are going through some difficult times right now. I hope you find encouragement in this:

You’re Doing Better than You Know {Coffee for Your Heart}Holley2014-04-02 14:00

Sara Torbett - Jar
Dear You,
You’ve been in the middle of so much lately. It’s probably hard to pause for even a moment, but I’m inviting you to now because there are some words you need to hear—words of affirmation and encouragement.
You’re a wonder. You’ve persevered when it would have been easier to quit. You’ve kept going when you felt weary. You’ve pushed through to what God has for you. And that, my friend, is extraordinary.
It may seem like no one sees, no one notices, no one even knows. But let me reassure you that the loving eyes of God have watched every step. And he has not just watched—he has walked beside you all the way.
Sometimes when we’re on a journey, we’re so focused on what’s ahead that we can’t see what or who’s behind us. So let me tell you what the view would be if you took a moment to look over your shoulder. You’d see hearts that have been encouraged by your bravery. Lives that have been inspired by your faithful love. People who will never be the same because of the faith you quietly showed along the way.
It can be easy to believe that if the road has been rough, we must have taken a wrong turn. We worry that somehow we’ve missed the path that would have let God use us. Let me set those fears at ease: you are making a difference right where you are today. While you get nervous that you may wander, the rest of us are in wonder at the journey you and God are sharing together.
So keep going, friend. You’re walking steadily. You’re moving forward each day. You’re leaving footsteps of faith for many to follow. Your life is a journey that’s more beautiful and powerful than you can fully see right now. (Is. 43:2; II Tim. 4:7; Heb. 12:1-3)
