Tuesday, August 25, 2015 WOW-Zine

Hello there! If you read last week's WOW-Zine and remember everything you read, you don't need to bother to keep reading! This is basically a rehash (kind of like leftovers!) of last week's information. But if for some reason you never got around to checking out last week's edition, you'll want to be sure to peruse this now.

Both Common Grounds and The Perk, which are our women's Bible study groups, will resume on Thursday, September 10th. Yes, you read that right. Both groups will meet on Thursdays this year. (That frees the youth group to be able to meet in the sanctuary on Wednesday evenings and have the space they need for their activities.) So those of you who used to come on Wednesday nights will need to start programming your brain AND your calendar to come on Thursday nights instead.

This evening is  the One Heart: PDX concert for women and teen girls only. Apparently tickets are still available online, as well as at the door. Here's the info:

Well now I have the next-best thing for you--enjoying Beth's ministry through a simulcast. This event will happen on Saturday, September 12, at Grace Baptist Church in Newberg. Go to this link to get more information about what the day entails:

You can register there online, and the cost is only $25, including snacks and lunch. Last day to register is September 4th. I got my ticket and hope you will too!

I hope you're enjoying the last few days before school starts and life becomes a different kind of busy!

Hi,
Hi, ladies! It's been a couple of weeks since I last wrote , but I've got a lot of information to pass on to you today. Please keep this for future reference.

This afternoon from 3-5 is the monthly Craft Party at Carol Gross's house. Bring whatever project you're working on and have a sweet afternoon together. 40080 SW Nelson Dr. (out by Laurelwood.) Her phone number is 503-680-5542.

If you signed up to bring cookies for the Cookie Walk at the Gaston Parade on Friday, please don't forget! Karen is heading it up this year, and she needs more people to work that booth. Activities will not be going on during the actual parade itself, but before and after. If you can help for 30 minutes, give Karen a call at 503-809-1116.

Both Common Grounds and The Perk, which are our women's Bible study groups, will resume on Thursday, September 10th. Yes, you read that right. Both groups will meet on Thursdays this year. Anyone want to join me  next Tuesday, the 25th for a super fun event? You'll need to buy the tickets on your own, but it would sure be fun to carpool to Portland. (Especially if someone else knows how to get to the Aladdin Theater!) This evening is for women and teen girls only. Please let me know right away if you plan on attending, and we can get rides worked out. Here's the info:

We Need Each Other!

One of my favorite, most romantic gifts ever was covered in cobwebs, rusty and from a garage sale! For someone that’s a bit of a germaphobe this is kind of a funny thing to say… but it was something I really wanted… and on our very tight newly married budget, there was no way we could afford what I’d dreamed of. A tandem bike! I imagined my husband and I taking long bike rides through our neighborhood and to the market to get a few groceries in the cute basket I would put on the front. It all just seemed like something out of a movie. So when we spotted this old rusty tandem Schwinn at the garage sale hidden behind some newer bikes, my heart leapt with love for it and the romantic rides that were going to follow!! The kind man hosting the sale let us have it for practically nothing…warning us it was really old and needed work. “Who doesn’t?” I thought.

Back seat riders…

We rode that bike EVERYWHERE! We added a basket (just like I’d imagined) to the front and ultimately a baby seat to the back… It was the best. It’s true, itwas really old so we had it tuned up as best as we could, but there wasn’t anything we could do about how heavy it was…just share in the load! I’m certain we put hundreds of miles on that old beater…The more time we spent on the bike the better we got at knowing what we needed from each other… sometimes with just small signals, even in our leans. I had to really trust the front seat driver because I couldn’t really see around him. Sometimes I’d want to quit, but Mike would always remind me how much I wanted this….When Mike took a bug to the face he learned he couldn’t spit sideways…it always flew back at me…I bet you can imagine how this conversation went…(romantic?). And he needed me to pedal harder up hills not just rest and let him carry the load! These may seem like “duhs”…but sometimes I’d just get captivated in the distracting things along the way!! We were a good team and really worked in tandem on the tandem!! As time went on, I loaded the basket up front heavier with more and more groceries making the handles harder to hold steady. Mike never complained.
When our oldest daughter, Erica, was in first grade and my middle daughter was big enough to be in the baby seat I had a great idea!! I was going to take over the captain’s seat, and convert a 30 minute walk with a stroller and a dawdling toddler into a 10 minute bike ride.
I hadn’t realized just how much work being the captain of the ship or the captain of the bike was! I put Erica on my old seat and her backpack in the cute little front grocery basket…WOW! How did Mike hold these handlebars steady with my added groceries every time we went to the store? Would I be able to make the turns?
And my daughter’s little legs weren’t quite long enough for her feet to reach the pedals so I just propped them up on the cross bar. Mike never said a word when I didn’t feel like pedaling and just “rested” mine here for a few minutes! And the weight of that 20 pound two year old in the back!! Were we SURE she only weighed 20 lbs? It felt like she was tipping the scale at 100! It was almost impossible to keep the bike balanced and safe!
I rode all the way to school dropped Erica off and just walked the heavy bike, and my dawdling 20 pound two year old home.

We Need Each Other!

I quickly recognized all of the work my riding partner had been doing and all of the responsibility he had been shouldering when I took his position. If you’re always a backseat rider, you can’t really ever see what’s needed up front. My arms would never get stronger to hold the handle bars straight, and my legs would never be able to pull the weight for two or three of us withoutdoing it! I was not able to balance the bike without someone there who was leaning with me.
Sure, sometimes when you go through life with someone, you’re going to take a bug or two to the face…maybe even wear a little spit. But how else are you going to figure out how to tell each other that this is not the best way to do things if you’re not talking about it and going through it together?? Besides…the bug guts made us such better communicators so quickly! When you rely on each other and talk things through, it makes you better. I wanted to be a good counterbalance, because I saw how spending time together made us both stronger. Doing things together makes you individually better. It makes us better husbands and wives, partners and friends. We NEED each other!
For if they fall, one will lift up another. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up!
Again, if two lie together, they keep warm, but how can one keep warm alone? And though a man may prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him – A threefold cord is not quickly broken!
Ecclesiastes 4:10-12

Tuesday, July 28, 2015 WOW-Zine

This Thursday at 9:30 AM is our last Perk (women's Bible study) for the summer. By popular demand we're going to start off with a little brunch. So if you'd like, bring along some kind of yummy goodness to share, and we'll celebrate having spent the last 10 1/2 months together in community. We've seen God work in so many different types of situations during this year, and we want to take the time to acknowledge what He's been doing. Child care is provided. (Just bring along a few dollars to show our sitters how much we appreciate them.) Last week you'd been informed The Hub parking lot would be unavailable this week, but things have changed, so feel free to park there on Thursday after all!

Tuesday, July 21,2015 WOW-Zine

Good morning, friends! Have you ever had a sleepless night? I mean, a TOTALLY sleepless night? Yep, it was "Sleepless in Gaston" for me last night, so hopefully whatever I put in this WOW-Zine will actually make sense!

I've got something pretty special to share with you today. Look at what's happening on Saturday, September 12th!

Audacious

Simulcast Theme & Exclusive Book Offer

(Beth's new book, Audacious, is available exclusively to simulcast participants prior to its release.)

Thirty years in the making, Audacious is a deep dive into the message that has compelled Beth Moore to serve women around the globe. Glancing over the years of ministry behind her and strengthening her resolve to the call before her, she came to the realization that her vision for women was incomplete. It lacked something they were aching for. Something Jesus was longing for. Beth identifies that missing link by digging through Scripture, unearthing life experiences, and spotlighting a turning point with the capacity to infuse any life with holy passion and purpose. What was missing? Well, let’s just say, it’s audacious and it's for all of us. And it's the path to the life you were born to live.
I believe a church in Newberg is hosting one of the simulcasts, so that's almost in our backyard! I attended one of these events several years ago, and it was almost as good as the time we went to see Beth Moore in person in Eugene. And a lot less expensive, which is always nice. So stay tuned for more information as I get it, but Save the Date now!
I hope you can join us this week for our next-to-the-last Bible study of the summer. The Perk will meet Thursday at 9:30 AM as usual this week and next before taking a break until the fall. It's not too late to jump in. It's a place you'll find it easy to develop friendships and share needs and joys with each other as we apply God's Word to our lives. Childcare is provided, so please bring a few dollars with you to compensate the two girls who watch the kiddos for us. Melissa is signed up for treats this week, but I just saw on Facebook this morning that she's really sick. So she easily may not make it this week. If someone would like to bring back-up goodies, feel free! (And get well, Melissa.)
Let me leave you with this devotion by author Liz Curtis Higgs.

This journey of faith? It isn’t meant to be a solo trip.
I didn’t get that at first. I was too excited about my salvation, my Jesus, my new life in Him. It really was all about me (how embarrassing). Then someone (gently) pointed out what people who love Jesus are called to do for one another.
Okay, then. It isn’t about me at all. It’s about God loving others through me — or through anyone He might choose. We’re simply vessels. Clay jars. Terracotta pots with a hole in the bottom, so water can flow through, rather than damage healthy roots.
This is what the Christian life is meant to look like: God pouring His living water not only in us, but also through us.
Right. So, here are some ways we can stop singing in the key of me-me-me and learn to serve the Lord — and others — with gladness.
1. “Honor one another above yourselves” {Romans 12:10}.
We’re not just talking about showing respect to other believers. We’re talking about putting them first. Above us. Ahead of us.
Easy to say, but often hard to do — at least, for this girl. Any sort of willingness to place others first comes from God. Only by His power can we embrace humility. Only by His strength can we learn how to play second fiddle and enjoy the tune.
2. “Live in harmony with one another” {Romans 12:16}.
Imagine being of the same mind with the people you do life with. Agreeing with one another. Quickly making amends. Staying in sync. Living together in peace.
A life without drama, without arguments, without slamming doors or raising voices. If we want a harmonious life, we need to care more about being kind than being right.
3. “Accept one another” {Romans 15:7}.
When you buy an item from the sale table marked “as is,” you know there’s a flaw somewhere, yet agree to overlook it. That’s what it means to accept one another, without judging, comparing, whining, or complaining.
If we could do this in our homes, that would be game-changing enough. If we could also do this in our churches, then every Sunday would be a family reunion, filled with hugs and shining faces and heartfelt good wishes and generous giving.
4. “Be kind and compassionate to one another” {Ephesians 4:32}.
As lovely as these descriptive words are — also translated “tenderhearted” and “merciful” and “sympathetic” and “understanding” — what it really comes down to is forgiveness.
Seeking or offering forgiveness is more than shared cups of tea and notes tucked in purses. It’s rubber-meets-the-road Christianity.
“Forgive one another as quickly and thoroughly as God in Christ forgave you.” {Ephesians 4:32, MSG}
5. “Encourage one another and build each other up” {1 Thessalonians 5:11}.
Hidden inside encourage is the Greek word for heart. When we encourage one another, we fill each other’s hearts, we build up rather than tear down, we look for ways to brighten rather than diminish.
Thumper’s father taught him, “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say nothing at all.” Our heavenly Father’s advice? “Find something nice to say and say it.”
6. “Spur one another on toward love and good deeds” {Hebrews 10:24}.
It’s easy to stay home, to chill out, to seek our own pleasure. But God calls and equips us to do far more. To get out there, to help others, to change our corner of the world.
At the end of the day, it’s loving and serving one another that satisfies our deepest longing to be part of something bigger than ourselves, to be one beautiful terracotta pot among many.

Until next week,

Tuesday, July 14, 2015 WOW-Zine

Good morning, ladies! It was great to be away on vacation, but, as always, nice to be back home. Not only did we brave the heat of Redding (In-and-Out Burger helped!), but we drove 19-hours in one fell swoop. I really think there should be some kind of prize for that! A big thanks to Amy Rusaw for filling in for me as teacher for both Bible studies that week. It's nice to know I left you in very capable hands.

Speaking of our Bible studies, if you didn't hear this announcement at church Sunday or read it in the Wapato Weekly yesterday, Common Grounds is cancelled for the rest of the summer, beginning this week. People's schedules have just got too busy on these mid-summer evenings, so we're stopping a few weeks early. We will resume in the fall. For those of you who have attended Common Grounds in the past, feel free to join us at The Perk on Thursday mornings at 9:30 if you're able. The Perk will continue to meet throughout the month of July, with our last class on the 30th. (Also resuming in the fall.) Childcare is provided, so please bring a couple dollars to pay our young ladies that watch your children. Carol R. has signed up for treats this week.

We don't have any special events planned for this summer, but are always open to a spontaneous activity. So if you'd like to go for a hike or spend a day at the beach, and you don't want to go by yourself, just let me know. I can quickly send off an invitation to everyone and we can have an impromptu party!

Until next week,
